Q: How do I know if Mireille is a good fit for me?
A: Mireille is available on the phone or through secure video to meet for a free 15-minute consultation. A: Live Text Sessions are scheduled by the client and last 30 minutes each. During this time, the therapist will be exclusively available to you, answering your texts live. A: Live Video Sessions are scheduled by the client and last 30 minutes each. The client has the option to leave the screen as is with a selected image (landscape, sunset, etc) or to select the live option where the therapist can see them. Sessions are always HIPAA protected, ensuring full privacy. Seashell Counseling takes precautions to ensure yourself and your data are always protected and kept confidential.
Q: Does Mireille still see clients face-to-face in an office?
A: As Mireille’s in-office waiting list and demands for virtual services were growing, it became apparent that the most effective, accessible and economical way of doing therapy for her clients was to transition to virtual services . This way, Mireille can accommodate her clientèle by providing more quality time to clients who can now communicate with her from their phone (iphone/Android), tablet, laptop or desktop in a secure HIPAA protected manner anytime of the day or night. No need to wait for the next appointment and lose momentum on presently occurring struggle, conflict and need for guidance or help!

Q: My teen is already on his phone too much, I don’t quite understand how an Unlimited Messaging Counseling package might be good for him?
A: Although in-person session has its benefits, it appears that in most cases (we exclude teenagers at risk) for adolescents, Unlimited Messaging Counseling works best for several reasons: Teens will be on their phone no matter what because this is the way this generation connects with each another and the world around them. Therefore, having access to a therapist 24/7 allows them to practice pro-activity with their lives and occurring issues by communicating with the therapist about what is happening and gaining inside and guidance. With access to a therapist at anytime, they may end up spending less time on social media, and more time solving presenting issues and practicing healthy coping skills. Additionally, teens have reported that having to wait for their next appointment in a few days when a problem is happening now is not helpful to them as they would like to be able to share and gain perspective within a few hours, otherwise issues and drama can evolve quickly, and so does their anxiety. By the time of their next in-person appointment, the issue is “yesterday’s new” and another situation may be arising slowly, but “is not a thing yet,” so they don’t feel the need to talk about it during their in-person session. In other words, we lose momentum on what is occurring in the “now” because of having 1 set in-person session per week, as opposed to having access to talk 24/7.
Q: When can my adolescent use the package/Can she use it in school too?
A: Anytime of the day and night, and she can absolutely use it in school. She has her own login and password, so she can message at anytime-during a bathroom break, lunch time, etc.-When Mireille answers, your teen will immediately receive an email with a secure direct portal link allowing her to quickly access the answer. If she wishes, she can then reply, or read it again later. Mireille encourages teenagers (and adults) to write at anytime and a lot, so that she can grasp a better understanding of a situation and it’s issues. The clientèle feedback so far is that Unlimited Messaging Therapy is very useful and efficient as clients, who for instance, are experiencing anxiety about a certain situation and say, cannot sleep, are able write to Mireille at 2 am as long of a message as they wish too! Mireille knows teenagers well; she is aware of the importance of her reaching out to them on a regular basis to verify how their coping skill practice is doing, following-up on a solution to an issue that was previously discussed, etc. Additionally, Mireille is aware that in most cases, the parents are the ones paying for the services for their adolescents, therefore, if the services are not being utilized, parents need to know.
Q: Can I read the messages, as the parent?
A: In an effort to better serve the minor clientèle, minor clients of Seashell Counseling LLC, Mireille St. Laurent MSW, LCSW have privacy rights. Therefore messages, videos and phones calls cannot be shared with parents as confidentiality applies. The only exceptions are: duty to warn circumstances and lack of therapy service package utilization by the minor.
Q: How do I know my teen understands what you are discussing with him?
A: Mireille has had an excellent reputation and feedback over the years with teenagers, young adults and adults. She knows her clientèles well and their respective needs. Mireille uses different communication techniques to ensure that her clients understand and are practicing their skills. For instance, after explaining a concept or a coping skill, she will ask: “Please tell me in your own words what you understand of what I said.” After receiving the answer, Mireille will repeat in a different manner, or explain again a portion of the skill that was missed, etc. Unlimited Messaging Therapy is so efficient because it allows her to keep in touch and remind clients of the skills to practice when necessary, provide continuous encouragement, follow-up on solutions to issues, etc. For the clients, Unlimited Messaging Therapy is such a plus because unlike during in-person sessions, clients are able to go back to the messages and read them again, as often as they need…a little bit like re-reading a good letter that warms your heart and soul.
